The farm Harnas is situated in the Omaheke Region in the central east of Namibia, an African country in the southern hemisphere. Namibia is bordered by Angola to the North, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Republic of South Africa to the south and Botswana to the east. The closest major town to Harnas is Gobabis, capital of the Omaheke Region. The Omaheke Region lies in a vast area covering more than 900 000 km² known as the Kalahari Desert. |

It is here, in the sandveld that Harnas is situated. This area has a summer rainfall climate. Massive cumulonimbus clouds start building in September, announcing spring and a new rainy season. It is not however until January that the majority of rain, in the form of thundershowers, starts falling. This rainy season usually continue into April, start of the Namibian winter, a very dry period with cold nights but generally warm days.

To get to Harnas from the Namibian capital of Windhoek, one should drive along the B6 Trans-Kalahari Highway that connects Namibia with South Africa via Botswana. Gobabis lies 202km from Windhoek. Upon entering Gobabis on the road from Windhoek, turn left at the first 4-way stop. Drive 8 km towards the Buitepos border post through Gobabis using the opportunity to top up your cars’ fuel, buy some biltong (a local pickled meet delicacy) and get some necessities like insect repellent and sunscreen lotion. Continue out of Gobabis towards the Botswana border. At a distance of 5.1km from the last four way intersection the sign “Harnas Lion Farm” will be on ones’ left. Take the first road immidiately after this sign also to your left, this is the C22 and is 45km tarmac up to the small town of Drimiopsis. From Drimiopsis until one reaches Harnas is gravel road. This road is kept in good condition and one can easily drive it with a sedan athough during the rainy season it is advised to enquire about the roads condition. The following sign “Harnas Lion Farm” will be on the left at 45.6km. Turn right immediately after this sign. Keep left at the Y junction at 53km with the Harnas sign also on the left.

The entrance to Harnas is at 92.5km where a big gate and a guard will welcome you. The guard will give you a guestbook to sign-in. Once on the farm one should drive slow and keep an eye out for free roaming wild animals. There is a sharp turn left at 98.8km to watch out for. There is another gate at 102.5km through which one passes. Turn right onto the airstrip at 103.1km, following it to it’s end.
Take the slight turn right and drive across a small wooden bridge and park under the canopy directly in front of you. After parking your car, walk over the large wooden bridge and continue to the lapa, the arge thatch-roofed building to your right. Here you wil be welcomed by our receptionist and can grab a refreshing drink before being shown to your chalet or camp site.
